Outdoor education

Off-site training for adolescent dogs, focused on the unique challenges of urban living

What is Outdoor Education?

A unique real-world training, socialization, and behavior program for adolescent dogs that prepares your growing pup for the challenges and excitement of urban life. We’ve raised dogs in the city for years, so we know how much goes into building skills and resiliency for canines in San Francisco!

  • Up to 5 days a week, for 4-24 weeks.

  • Every session, each pup gets at least 1 hour of intensive one-on-one training with a dedicated trainer.
  • Work on leash manners, reactivity, calmness and focus around distractions, socialization to new people, places and experiences, and more.

  • Includes off-leash playtime with appropriate playmates.

Training for Urban Life

  • We find environments that provide the right amounts and types of distractions to help your pup learn new skills. Different neighborhoods offer different opportunities, from learning to be calm and focused in busy neighborhoods, to coming when called at the beach or the park. One day we might be at the beach by Crissy Field, the next we’ll be visiting stores in busy Hayes Valley!

  • We focus on skills for real life: Can your dog lay down and relax while you’re enjoying a latte outside? Can they walk through a pet store without sampling the merchandise? Can they walk on a crowded street without needing to say hi to everyone?

Ongoing Socialization

  • Even with appropriate exposure with you or a professional before the close of puppy’s socialization window (~16 weeks), puppies often begin to show fearfulness as they mature.  This is often observed in city and neighborhood settings where there can be a lot of activity and significant environmental contrasts.
  • As we socialize throughout the training process, we watch closely for any signs of fearfulness or reactivity (and are ready to provide subsequent training to build confidence and alternate behaviors).

Personalized and Positive

  • Our trainers discuss your goals and focus on what’s most important to you — your lifestyle, your neighborhood, and your values. Learn more about our team and our philosophy here

  • Science-backed, positive training that works in everyday life. No pain, no force, and no fear.

  • Humans welcome too! You’re always welcome to join us and your pup to see what they’re learning and how we train. We’re happy to help you build your pup’s skills!

  • You’ll get regular progress reports and suggestions for at-home training, plus the ability to take specialized private training if needed.
